Mastering is final delivery work. Artifact cleanup is source repair. Mixing sits between them when you have stems or a multitrack session. The processors may overlap, but the decisions do not.

If the raw Suno export sounds natural and only needs final level, tonal balance, or translation, it may be ready for mastering. If you hear a glassy layer, sharp vocal consonants, plastic vocal tone, splashy cymbals, or high-frequency hiss before any plugins are active, mastering is the wrong first move. You would be polishing the problem.

The useful order is simple: repair a problem where it begins, mix what needs balancing, and master the finished result.

These stages are easy to confuse because an EQ, compressor, or limiter can appear in all three. The tool does not define the job. The listening goal and the scope of the change do.

This is not a rigid rule that every song must pass through three paid services. A clean stereo export may only need mastering. A demo may sound fine after a light cleanup pass. The table is a way to stop one stage from inheriting a job it cannot do well.

Diagnose the source before touching the master

Bypass the processing chain and listen to the original export at a comfortable level. Do not start by asking whether it is loud enough. Ask what catches your attention when the track is still quiet.

Listen to a dense chorus, a vocal phrase with several consonants, and a reverb tail after the arrangement drops away. Then check headphones, small speakers, and one brighter playback system if you have access to them.

Level-match your comparisons as closely as practical. The louder version often feels more exciting for a few seconds, even when it is harsher. If you need a visual second opinion, a spectrogram can help you inspect persistent bands and high-frequency texture, but the image is not an automatic diagnosis. Your ears still make the decision.

The correct order: cleanup, mixing, then mastering

The correct order follows the scope of the problem:

  1. Cleanup: reduce defects that are already present in the original export.
  2. Mixing: balance musical parts if you have stems or a session that allows separate control.
  3. Mastering: make final stereo decisions after the source and mix are approved.
  4. Quality control: compare the rendered file on several devices and check that conversion did not introduce clipping or other surprises.

Suppose a chorus has real energy, but the vocal tail carries a glassy shimmer. A bright EQ and limiter make the chorus feel bigger. They also lift the shimmer. A broad treble cut then takes air from the drums and vocal without removing the moving, metallic texture. The master is duller and the artifact remains.

Working earlier is usually more selective. Repair the shimmer before loudness processing, confirm that the cleaned source still feels like the same song, and only then decide how bright or dense the final master should be.

What loudness and high-end processing can make worse

Mastering does not create every problem it reveals. Often it makes a quiet source defect easier to notice.

  • Limiting: raising average level can bring low-level fizz, reverb grain, and consonant residue closer to the foreground.
  • High shelves and exciters: extra brightness can exaggerate metallic shimmer, splashy cymbals, and sibilance.
  • Compression: release behavior may make a moving artifact pump with the vocal or drums.
  • Stereo widening: a smeared or unstable high end can feel broader without becoming cleaner.
  • Loudness matching by ear alone: the louder render may win the first comparison even when it becomes tiring after a minute.

This does not make limiting, compression, or bright EQ bad. It means you should not use them to cover a defect they cannot isolate. Decision tree: what should you do next?

Start with the unprocessed export and follow the first answer that fits:

  1. Do you hear metallic shimmer, robotic vocal texture, hiss, or smeared high-frequency tails before any mastering? Yes: start with cleanup. No: continue.
  2. Is the problem a relationship between parts, such as vocal level, bass balance, drum impact, or reverb amount? Yes: mix the stems or return to the multitrack session. No: continue.
  3. Does the stereo mix already feel musical and controlled, but need final level, tonal balance, peak safety, or consistency with other tracks? Yes: move to mastering. No: identify the specific source or mix problem before adding a master chain.
  4. Did a mastering preset make the track brighter and louder but also more brittle? Bypass it, level-match the comparison, and return to cleanup or mixing. Do not keep stacking corrective processors onto the master.
  5. Can you correct the issue cleanly with a narrow manual move? If yes, keep the manual fix. If several moving defects demand repeated automation or the correction damages nearby music, a dedicated cleanup pass may be quicker.

There is no prize for using more stages. The decision tree is meant to remove unnecessary processing, not prescribe it.

When stems help

Stems help when the defect belongs mostly to one part. If the vocal is harsh but the cymbals are fine, treating the vocal stem gives you more room than processing the full mix. The same is true for a noisy ambience layer, an over-bright percussion stem, or a bass part that masks the kick.

Use stems when you need to:

  • change vocal or instrument level;
  • automate one phrase without touching the rest of the song;
  • apply de-essing only to the vocal;
  • control cymbals without darkening the vocal air;
  • rebuild reverb or space around a specific part.

Stems are not automatically cleaner. Separation can add watery edges, missing transients, bleed, or phasey residue. Compare the stems against the original full mix before committing to them. If the separated files sound worse, a cautious full-mix cleanup may preserve more of the song.

When manual tools are enough

A manual path is sensible when you can name the defect, find where it happens, and correct it without collateral damage.

For example:

  • automate a short harsh phrase instead of darkening the whole song;
  • use a de-esser when vocal sibilance is the only problem;
  • use narrow dynamic EQ when one resonance appears predictably;
  • edit an isolated click or noise by hand;
  • return to the mix when the issue is balance, not texture.

Stop and reassess if every fix creates another problem. A broad cut that removes vocal air, repeated automation across the entire song, or a long chain built to chase moving shimmer usually means the manual path has become more complicated than the result deserves.
